Troubleshooting Ring Doorbell Battery Drain Issues

Published on August 24, 2025

A Ring Doorbell's battery should last for months, but sometimes it can drain in just a few weeks or even days. If you're constantly recharging your device, here are the most likely causes and how to fix them.

1. Frequent Motion Events

If your doorbell is facing a busy street or sidewalk, it will constantly detect motion, record video, and send you notifications. This is the biggest cause of battery drain.

  • Solution: Adjust your Motion Zones in the Ring app to exclude high-traffic areas like public sidewalks. You can also lower the Motion Sensitivity to reduce false alerts from things like passing cars.

2. Cold Weather

Lithium-ion batteries, like the one in your Ring Doorbell, don't perform well in cold temperatures. If it's freezing outside (below 32°F or 0°C), the battery will drain much faster and may not recharge properly.

  • Solution: While you can't change the weather, being aware of this is helpful. You may need to charge your device more often during the winter months. If possible, bring the battery inside to warm up before charging.

3. Weak Wi‑Fi Signal

If your doorbell has a weak connection to your router, it has to work harder to stay connected, which uses more power. A weak signal can drain the battery surprisingly quickly.

  • Solution: Check your device's signal strength (RSSI) in the "Device Health" section of the Ring app. If the signal is poor (e.g., -65 or worse), consider moving your router closer or using a Wi‑Fi extender.
